She's a Brick...

Thursday, 2 September 2010
I decided to put myself to work and build a brick patio for Kingsley. I'd like to use this spot for a grill because having a grill on the deck is a little scary to me. (Fires) Also, our deck isn't huge so this would give the man of the house his own space to grill (or braai as South Africans say).

First, I dug up the grass and raked out an area. It isn't level but I didn't quite realize that until later. But, it's level enough.  Next, I laid layers of plastic to discourage weeds and started a brick frame. These are all recycled materials.

My next door neighbor kindly donated some of his old bricks and even helped me get some from a friend. I used the old bricks left over from the out building that was taken down on my property.

This was an easy project and complete in just two evenings. I think it looks cute. I lined it with my herbs and have basil, oregano, rosemary, mint and chives close by.

Oh you gotta have a proper braai for a South African! They will die without it!

I love this idea - what a great way to use recycled materials to create a perfect grilling space!
