Denae is originally from Saint Joseph, Missouri. Her career in television news reporting also led her to: Knoxville, Tennessee, Hazard, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Ohio, London, United Kingdom, and Eugene, Oregon.

She lives in Columbus, Ohio with her husband and two kitties (Lily and Violet). Denae's parents and brother also live in Columbus and she feels fortunate to be close to them since most of her adult life has been lived away from family. 

With a Master's Degree from the University of Westminster, U.K. in International Journalism (2008), Denae decided to pursue a PhD in Communication and Information Science (specification in Journalism) from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She completed the degree in May 2015 and earned a Fulbright Scholar Fellowship to continue her research about journalists covering conflict. Denae is currently conducting research as a Fulbright scholar in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Her methods include in-depth interviews, focus groups, qualitative survey, and ethnography. 

While not working, Denae enjoys cooking, crocheting, videoing and photographing wildlife, working on her second non-fiction book, and catching up with friends and family on social media.
